Safety comes first when choosing a baby car seat!

In today's society, spending time in the car with your baby is inevitable, so why not make it an enjoyable experience. Choose a baby car seat that is not only safe, but also comfortable for the baby and those long drives will fly by in no time. Babies enjoy the car, the low humming sound of the engine and the movement of the car often lulls babies to sleep. You can also put on some peaceful baby music on and hang some colorful toys above the car seat for the baby’s entertainment.

There are two types of car seats to choose from for your newborn. First, the rear-facing infant seat which is used from birth to about nine months or 22 lb in weight. The infant car seat has a distinct advantage of doubling as a carrier or even a comfortable napping spot for a small baby. Most infant car seats come with a base and are extremely convenient to click the seat in and out of the car without disturbing the baby. The second type is the combined infant/toddler car seat which is used from birth to four years or 40 lb in weight. This seat is rear facing at first and then turned to forward facing later on for the baby who is over 22 lb in weight. The obvious advantage to this type of car seat is that it can be used for a longer period of time.

No matter which type of baby car seat you select for your newborn there are some basic features and safety issues to consider. Following is a short list:

The infant car seat should have at least a three point harness system. However, a five point harness system which secures the belt at the shoulders, crotch and at each hip provides greater safety for the baby.
Make sure to always thoroughly read the manufacture's installation instructions carefully.
Always strap the baby into the car seat no matter how short the drive.
